Part I

1.0 Executive summary:

Rwenzori Rural Health Services is a Community Based Organisation (CBO) founded in 2005 in Kasese district. It is registered with the District Local Government and presently operates in three (3) sub counties of Rukoki, Bugoye and Kilembe.

It’s broad objectives are:

1. Promoting Rural Health Services

2. Sensitizing the community on development issues

3. Helping the community to develop a sense of self recognition and get empowered to exercise their rights.

4. Participating in such other development issues as planned by the local governments, the government of Uganda, and partners.

The Mission Statement is:

To contribute towards raising the living standards of the rural communities by extending health care services near to the people.

The Vision is:

To have every house hold having all the health amenities, acceptable health records and reduced morbidity and mortality rates in the community.

The Development Plan

In line with the above objectives, the organisation has designed a 5 year development plan soliciting for support in addition to local efforts in order to meet some of the needs of the community in the area of operation to supplement government efforts.

The five year development plan has been divided into sections which can either obtain resources separately or wholesale.

The sections are:

Section A Health Centre Establishment

(a) Health Centre Construction

(b) Health Centre equipment and drugs

(c) Laboratory construction

(d) Placenta Pit provision

(e) Incinerator construction

(f) Solar Power provision

(g) Model Pit Latrine construction

(h) Construction of 2 Rain Water harvesting tanks.

Section B: HIV/AIDS; awareness creation, care and support.

Section C: Water & Sanitation; Spring protection, Gravity flows, and making

latrine slabs.

Section D Support to Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children

Section E: Care for Vulnerable Older persons over 65 years and who are

caring for orphans

Section F: Cross cutting issues.

Note

Each section is being budgeted separately in case willing partners are interested in a specific section. This however does not rule out wholesale project resource mobilization.

In a humble way, Rwenzori Rural Health Services, and the community, will contribute towards the project financially and /or in kind in order to make it a success and plant deeper roots of ownership. The total amount requested for the five years is US $ 660,162.70

EXPECTED OUT COME

The expected outcome is to have a community with improved health and sanitation and sustainably maintaining their health living conditions.

EXPECTED IMPACT

The impact will be to have reduced morbidity and mortality rates, increased latrine coverage and protected water sources and enlightened community who are healthy and living in a clean environment.

MONITORING & EVALUATION

Monitoring and evaluation will be done by all the stake holders who include the service users, Donors, staff, local governments and other invited parties. Evaluations will be continuous although there will be annual internal evaluations and the summative evaluation.

Part II

2.0 District Profile

2.1 Location

Kasese District is located in western Uganda, It lies between latitudes 00 12’S and 00 26’N, and Longitudes 29o 04’ E and 30o 18 ‘E, with the equator passing across it. Kasese Town is a distance of about 400Km tarmac road via Fort portal from Kampala the capital city of Uganda. It can also be reached by air from Entebbe International Airport in Uganda within 30 minutes of flight.

In the west, it borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while in the north, it boarders Bundibugyo district, in the northeast, Kabarole District and in the south Bushenyi district.

The total land area is 2729 Sq Km of which 461sq km are covered with waters and swamps. Queen Elizabeth national park covers 885 Sq Km and Rwenzori National Park 652 Sq Km. both being part of the whole district area.

The District has 27 sub counties. There are 3 hospitals all with a total capacity of 440 beds but are always over crowded. There are also several small health units (Health Centers 2&3) belonging to government and missions and 2 Health centre 4 for Anglica Church. There is one Nursing and midwifery training school Kagando Mission Hospital.

In addition, Kasese District is prone to natural atrocities like civil conflicts, earth quakes, droughts, floods, landslides and disease epidemics like cholera.
